Movies I Love

j04064771.jpgI love watching movies.  Not necessarily at the movies, mostly at home.  One of my best friends and I will spend a couple Saturdays a month, ordering take-out and watching a good (or, not so good) movie.  We love it.

When my boys were small, I’d spread a blanket on the floor in our living room.  I’d make sandwiches and pop in a movie (back then they were VHS tapes) and we’d have a picnic while we watched together.  We watched all sorts of stuff.  Disney movies like Bambi, Pinnochio, Cinderella (yes, boys watched Cinderella), and Sleeping Beauty.  Classic movies like Lassie Come Home and The Yearling.

Now they’re older and though we don’t spread a blanket on the floor, they’ll still sit with their old mom and watch movies with her.  Being the only Christian in my house, sometimes I won’t even condsider watching some of the stuff they want to watch, but we can usually find a common ground.  My husband isn’t much of a movie lover, but if I insist enough that he’ll like a movie, he’ll sit and watch with me once in a while too.

I love all kinds of movies – comedies, dramas, foreign, animated.  I’m not crazy about SciFi, action, and horror, but I’ll give some a chance.  I loved 28 Days Later and The Sixth Sense.

For the fun of it, I thought I’d just post a random list of some of the movies I love.  I hope you’ll comment and post some of yours.

In no particular order:

  • To Kill a Mockingbird – could watch it over and over.
  • All the Disney movies listed above
  • Toy Story and Toy Story II – I think two of the funniest movies ever.
  • Finding Nemo
  • Babe
  • Gosford Park
  • Remains of the Day
  • Howard’s End
  • Sense and Sensibility
  • A Room with a View
  • About a Boy

  • The Scent of Green Papaya
  • The Joy Luck Club
  • Memoirs of a Geisha

  • Enchanted April
  • Amelie
  • Like Water for Chocolate
  • Chocolat

Whew.  That’s not even all of them, but I’ll stop there. Hahaha  Like I said, I love all kinds of movies and now it’s apparent, I love a lot of movies.

So there’s my list.  I think they’re good movies, you might disagree.  Discuss.  Haha

  1. I love Napoleon Dynamite. With a PASSION.

  2. Me too. My husband hated it, my brothers loved it, and my (then) six-year-old was quoting it verbatim. Good fun. :)

I love Babe. I thought I was the only adult who could claim that. Glad to know I’m not alone.

I ADORE “Love Actually”, except for the porn-movie scenes. I got the DVD and the soundtrack for Christmas. I wept for Emma Thompson when she went upstairs to her room after finding the heart necklace. “Both Sides Now” was a brilliant song choice for that scene. My heart also broke for the guy who was in love with his best friend’s wife. Wow, why did I like that movie so much? It was really sad in places.

We own all three “LOTR” movies, in their most fully extended versions (5 discs). Also in their original-release versions (1 disc). Don’t ask me why we have to keep both… I don’t know. I do know that when I donated one of the “regular” (redundant) versions, Amazon sent a replacement within days. Days. And that was only because a weekend and a postal holiday interfered with the shipping. LOL

Have you seen “The Holiday”? I enjoyed that movie a lot. Also, “Enchanted” is excellent. Even my brothers loved it.

  3. One of my sisters can’t understand what it is that I like about Napoleon Dynamite. It’s a favorite in this house and my kids know it backwards and forwards. My youngest son does a MEAN Napoleon impression! Haha

Oh, Love Actually…I just love this movie, like you, except for the porn-movie scenes, as well. :-( The two story lines you mention are also two of my favorites. I want to slap her stupid husband (LOVE Alan Rickman!)as I see him falling into the schemes of his evil secretary. When Emma Thompson is crying in her bedroom…I think every woman on the planet can identify with her.

Lord of the Rings…gosh, what can I say? We have all the extended editions too, plus the originals! Hahaha I canNOT part with them. I don’t even like to lend them out! Hahaha When they were first released, we watched one or more EVERY day! I don’t think I could ever get tired of them!

I haven’t seen The Holiday (does that have Cameron Diaz in it?) or Enchanted. Here’s a quirky thing about me – if I don’t care for a certain actor, I’ll almost never watch a movie with that actor in it. I’m not much of a Cameron fan. Hahaha My sisters cannot fathom my stubborness and I know I’ve missed some good movies because of this. I’ve heard that Enchanted is terrific – I’ll have to check it out! :-)

  4. “The Holiday” does feature Cameron Diaz. I’m not much of a fan, either, but it also stars Kate Winslet, and I enjoyed her very much.

Watch “Enchanted”. I don’t think you’ll be sorry.
    “Is goooood!” (That’s a quote. :D )

  5. good picks! i also loved babe, a room with a view, amelie, enchanted april, jane eyre, love actually, eat drink man woman, night on earth(nice pick…not many know it!).
also, emma, the big lebowski, santitos, pan’s labyrinth, i’ll stop there…(but could go on)

    good post idea!

  6. Kate Winslet does cancel out Cameron Diaz. Hahaha If it comes on my “On Demand” I’ll give it a go. :-)

Goodbear – Eat, Drink, Man, Woman is the reason I thought of the list. I’d seen it years ago and loved it. The other night, I was flicking through my Comcast free “On Demand” and there it was! I was so happy, I clicked it on right away! It got me thinking about all the movies I’ve seen that I really, really, liked. Pan’s Labyrinth – forgot that one! Great movie! :-)

I thought of 2 more – The Prestige and The Illusionist. Really liked those – especially The Prestige.

  7. Ahhhh you totall forgot Misery!!! Unless my eyes skipped over it, but I’m hoping you just forgot ;)

So what’s up with not liking Cameron? I was JUST telling Steve yesterday, as we both listened to her voice while Trevor watched Shrek in the back seat of our cool mini van :) Anyway….I was just telling him that I love her! But I don’t think I loved her as much until The Holiday! She’s a RIOT in it. Erika has it saved on her DVR, we should have a girls night and watch it!

  8. Oh man. How could I forget Misery?? AND Dolores Claiborne?? They’ve been favorites of mine for a looong time! Good catch.

Cameron…I don’t know. You know me, I have these weird quirks about people. I’m working on it. Haha

I’d love to have a girl’s night with you guys and give Cameron a chance! :-)

  9. You have a great taste with movies lovely selection
